Washington State Pioneers Free Certification for LGBTQ+ Businesses

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington state is set to become one of the first in the nation to offer official, free certification for LGBTQ+-owned businesses, a move aimed at bolstering economic equity and providing access to government contracts. Announced Friday by Gov. Bob Ferguson and the Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE), the new LGBTQ Business Enterprise program will allow certified businesses to be listed in a state directory, incentivizing partnerships with state agencies.

"Washington state has a thriving, diverse business community," said Governor Ferguson, emphasizing the program's role in recognizing and supporting LGBTQ+ business owners. OMWBE Director Lekha Fernandes added that the certification will "improve equity in public spending by recognizing LGBTQ+-owned businesses in government contracting."

Matt Lander, Washington state's LGBTQ+ Commissioner and Secretary, highlighted the program's potential to address economic disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ community, contributing to a "fairer economy for all Washingtonians."

To qualify, businesses must be for-profit, properly licensed in Washington, and at least 51% owned and controlled by LGBTQ+ individuals, among other standard business requirements. This new certification joins existing programs for disadvantaged, minority, women, and veteran-owned small businesses.
